The remit of the Funding Committee is to support the development of the scheme, assess applications, interview candidates and make funding recommendations based on the assessment criteria.

The NIHR Global Advanced Fellowship (GAF) applications are reviewed by two sub-Committees whose members are allocated applications to review based on the details of career stage of the applicants provided in applications. Applications will be assessed based on individual experience and the opportunities that will have been available to applicants based on professional background and circumstance.

The make-up of the Funding Committee is reviewed regularly and adjusted in response to need. If you would like to register your interest to join this committee, or any NIHR Academy committee, please complete the expression of interest form.

The two sub-committees will be co-Chaired as outlined below. Members of the committees are currently being finalised and will be announced prior to committee review of the applications.

Early career sub-committee

This committee will review applications from those earlier in their career that have recently completed or are soon to be awarded a PhD:

  • Professor Kamija Samuel Phiri (Co-Chair) - Professor of Clinical Epidemiology, Kumuzu University of Health Sciences
  • Professor Hannah Kuper (Co-Chair) - Director of the International Centre for Evidence in Disability, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Senior career sub-committee

This committee will review applications from those who are more established as an independent researcher:

  • Professor Sabiha Yusuf Essack (Co-Chair) - Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal
  • Professor Robert Heyderman (Co-Chair) - Professor of Infectious Diseases and International Health, University College London
