Human capital and health research
The Office for Strategic Co-ordination of Health Research (OSCHR) partners (the NIHR, MRC and the Devolved Administrations) share a vision of a research workforce with the capabilities and capacity to lead, participate in and use research of the highest quality and relevance, fit to meet the challenges of 21st century health research.
In 2009, the OSCHR partners reviewed the current state of the human capital landscape. Part of this involved a UK-wide fellowships survey, led by the MRC. The aim was to produce a high-level resource that could support strategic planning and assist OSCHR partners in identifying issues for further work. The survey provides an overview of twelve funders’ investments to grow and sustain the capabilities and capacity for clinical, health services and public health research.
While the mapping is inevitably incomplete, it provides an evidence base that complements other sources, such as the outcome reports of the RAE 2008 and the annual survey of Clinical Academic Staffing Levels in UK Medical Schools published by the Medical Schools Council.
