The National Institute for Health Research Faculty
The Faculty of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is for all professionals who carry out people and patient-based applied health research and who are funded by NIHR or the Department of Health Policy Research Programme (PRP). This includes clinical, health services, public health and social science research.
The goals of NIHR Faculty are to:
- attract, develop and retain the best research professionals
- enhance the professional status of Faculty Members
- value research leaders and collaborators
- support research that meets the needs of patients and the public
- promote academic training paths for healthcare professionals across all health and social care disciplines.
Membership of the NIHR Faculty
Membership is automatic for any researcher supported by NIHR or PRP funding as long as:
- part of their salary costs are funded by the NIHR or PRP and
- the researcher is employed by the NHS or by a University.
There are no other membership criteria.
Transitional Research and Development funding is not NIHR funding. A salary funded through this income stream does not confer Faculty Membership.
NIHR and PRP funds are only awarded through competition and after extensive academic peer review. This guarantees that anyone receiving NIHR or PRP funds merits Faculty membership because they will be engaged in high quality research that is relevant to the NHS, patients and the public.
There are four types of Faculty membership and an Honorary status.
