NIHR Associates
NIHR Associates are Faculty members who support research led by others and receive NIHR funding as part of their salary. They include the following individuals:
-
clinical and clinical support staff
-
scientific, laboratory and technical staff
-
study facilitators, study practitioners and data managers
-
RM&G staff and other CLRN staff.
Most Associates' salaries relating to NIHR research are funded through NIHR Research Networks, Biomedical Research Centres and Units, Clinical Research Facilities, Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRCs), or through funding via an NIHR grant. Their salary may also, at local discretion, be funded in part from NIHR Flexibility and Sustainability Funding. As with other categories of NIHR Faculty membership, the NIHR contribution may be only one element of an NIHR Associate's salary. Other sources of funding could include NHS patient care, NHS education and training, HEFCE, Research Councils, Charities or industry.
How NIHR funding supports NIHR Associates is described in the set of case studies of NIHR Faculty members.
Becoming an NIHR Associate
Researchers become NIHR Associates through their employment role in supporting research. The research they support may be funded by the NIHR or DH Policy Research Programme, or by partner research funders where the research is quality assured under the Research Governance Framework.
