NIHR AssociatesNIHR Associates are Faculty members who support research led by others and receive NIHR funding as part of their salary. All clinical and clinical support staff, and scientific, laboratory and technical staff are included.
The part of NIHR Associates' salaries relating to NIHR research will be a "Service Support Cost" and is likely to be funded through NIHR Research Networks. Their salary may also, at local discretion, be funded in part from NIHR Flexibility and Sustainability Funding. As with other categories of NIHR Faculty membership, the NIHR contribution may be only one element of an NIHR Associate's salary. Other sources of funding could include NHS patient care, NHS education and training, HEFCE, Research Councils, Charities or industry.
How NIHR funding will support NIHR Associates is described in the set of case studies of NIHR Faculty members.
Becoming an NIHR AssociateResearchers become NIHR Associates through their employment role in supporting research. The research they support may be funded by NIHR or PRP, or by our partner research funders where the research is quality assured under the Research Governance Framework.
NIHR Associates undertake activities such as analysing tissue samples, or enrolling patients in clinical trials depending on the Associate's role.
We will announce further details of NIHR Associates later in 2009.
