Invention for Innovation (i4i) - 12th call for Product Development Awards

Applications are invited for NIHR Invention for Innovation (i4i) research proposals for translational R&D projects aimed at cultivating new techniques or technologies into innovative interventions which address existing or emerging healthcare needs. i4i supports projects developing innovative medical technology including medical devices, active implantable devices and in vitro diagnostic devices. i4i also supports projects which utilise and develop techniques or technologies from other industry sectors that could have a potential impact if applied in a healthcare setting.

DH Policy Research Programme - Invitation for Applications

A review of self-inflicted deaths in the Criminal Justice System – exploring contributory factors and identifying approaches

 

The Department of Health invites outline proposals for a single research project to provide evidence for a greater understanding of the rise in self-inflicted deaths across the Criminal Justice System (CJS) and to explore contributory factors and identify potential approaches to reverse this trend.

Funds of up to £250,000 are available to support this work, over around 24 months. The deadline for applications is 13 June 2016. This is a significant opportunity to inform policy in a vital area.

The specificity and sensitivity of medical examiners’ review to identify potentially avoidable deaths due to problems in care

 

  1. The Department of Health invites outline proposals for a single research project on the specificity and sensitivity of medical examiners’ review to identify potentially avoidable deaths due to problems in care. Funds of up to £600,000 are available to support this work, over around 24 months. The deadline for applications is 13 June 2016.

 

  1. The research should inform how medical examiner review of non-coroner death certification can work best alongside the more in-depth Retrospective Case Record Review (RCRR) developed by NHS England, so that organisations and professionals can better identify any possible problems with healthcare provision, and remedy these. This is a significant opportunity to inform policy in a vital area for the NHS, patients, staff and public.

DH Policy Research Programme - Policy Research Units - Invitation To Tender

The Department of Health’s Policy Research Programme wishes to commission Policy Research Units in two high priority areas. The purpose of these Units is to meet the longer-term policy research needs of the Department, as well as to secure the capacity for work to be undertaken at short notice and for rapid synthesis of evidence.

The Department, therefore, invites applications to deliver a five-year programme of high quality research in the following priority areas, each of which will constitute a Policy Research Unit:

1. Obesity
2. Mental Health

Funding and designation for NIHR Clinical Research Facilities to be renewed and refreshed

Closing date: 22 June 2016 Publish date: 28 January 2016

The Application Guidance for the new one-stage, open, competitive process to renew and refresh NIHR funding and designation for Clinical Research Facilities (CRFs) is now available. An Assessment Panel will review applications and make recommendations to the Department of Health on NIHR CRF designation and levels of funding.

The purpose of the scheme is to provide NIHR funding to meet the necessary recurrent NHS infrastructure costs and NHS Support Costs of externally-funded, world-class, early translational (experimental medicine) research that needs to be undertaken in dedicated, purpose-built CRFs in England.

All NHS organisations in England with an established CRF, including those with existing contracts for NIHR CRFs, are eligible to apply. The application forms are now available.

The closing date for submission of the applications for NIHR funding for CRFs for Experimental Medicine is Wednesday 22 June 2016 at 13:00.

16/48 – Evaluating the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NHS DPP)

The HS&DR Programme is interested in receiving applications which address knowledge gaps on the impact and sustainability of the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NHS DPP) in England.

Evaluation proposals must include the whole of the NHS DPP, and can include comparison with services provided elsewhere in the UK.

Please note this is a single-stage assessment process, and guidance to applicants needs to be carefully followed.

The Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation Programme is accepting applications to its researcher-led work stream as follows:

16/34 EME Researcher Led

Applications are sought for research into interventions that are based or used by the NHS and its partners. This document provides the detailed call specification for applications to the EME researcher-led workstream. Applicants should note:

1. applications should focus on establishing efficacy of an intervention;
2. proof of concept in humans for the intervention already needs to be established and should be clearly demonstrated in the application;
3. applications may include embedded mechanistic evaluations, however, stand-alone mechanistic studies are excluded from this call;
4. applications may investigate novel or repurposed interventions and tests;
5. the discovery of new biomarkers is excluded from this call;
6. studies involving incremental or minor improvements to existing technologies are excluded from this call.

The deadline for applications is 5 July 2016, by 1pm.

Programme Development Grants - Invitation for Applications

Closing date: 22 July 2016 Publish date: 25 May 2016

Applications are invited for Programme Development Grant funding. Programme Development Grants are designed to increase the rate and number of successful applications for a full Programme Grant by supporting the completion of the necessary preparatory work to suitably position the research team to submit a competitive Stage 2 Programme Grant application. Individual awards are for a maximum of £100k over a period of six to eighteen months. The amount of funding awarded, however, is determined by the scale and nature of the research activity to be conducted. Successful applicants, on completion of their development work, may proceed straight to a Stage 2 Programme Grant application.

Research for Patient Benefit Programme Competition 30 - invitation for applications

Closing date: 03 August 2016 Publish date: 29 April 2016

The NIHR Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) programme invites research proposals which are related to the day-to-day practice of health service staff and is concerned with having an impact on the health or well-being of patients and users of the NHS. As a responsive rather than a commissioning programme, RfPB does not seek to name specific topic areas and welcomes applications on a wide range of issues and aims to fund high quality research that will be directed at achieving benefit for users of the NHS in England. The programme supports applications which are regionally derived and applications which have emerged from interaction with patients and the public, which relate to patient and service user experience, and which have been drawn up in association with a relevant group of service users.

The ECMC initiative is jointly funded by Cancer Research UK, the NIHR in England and the Departments of Health for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
 
The ECMC Network strives to push the boundaries of cancer care, by delivering novel and personalised treatments that target a wide range of cancer types across both adult and paediatric specialties.
 
Existing ECMC locations are invited to apply for status for the 2017-22 period, and continue their contribution to a leading Network of early-phase clinical trials.
 
Any location that is not currently an ECMC and wishes to apply for ECMC status must first fill in an Expression of Interest (EoI).
