The Health Education England (HEE) and National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Integrated Clinical Academic (ICA) Programme provides personal research training awards for healthcare professionals (excluding doctors and dentists) who wish to develop careers that combine clinical research and research leadership with continued clinical practice and clinical development. Applicants must belong to one of the eligible professions. 

Personal awards (Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowships, Clinical Lectureships and Senior Clinical Lectureships) are made following annual competitions. Please see the scheme pages for further information (link below).

Our next competitions are scheduled to launch in March 2017.

The Programme

Five levels of award are available, each requiring the support of clinical and academic host organisations, which together form a career pathway for aspiring and developing non-medical clinical academics:

Doctoral and Post-Doctoral award holders are also eligible for ICA Programme-funded mentorship support through the ICA Mentorship and Outreach Programme.

New: A free online course of relevance to anyone considering a clinical academic career

The next NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) and Leeds University Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) ‘Improving Healthcare Through Clinical Research’ will commence on 6th June.

The course is built around the concept of discovery and the ethical and scientific principles that inform every aspect of the process of developing new treatments in healthcare. Short videos involving different members of research teams, patients and educators, complemented by activities and opportunities for further reading provided the content. The course is designed to provide around 4 hours of learning a week. Over a 4 week period, learners are able to follow the process of scientific discovery from a number of perspectives.
