NIHR Flexibility and Sustainability FundingNIHR Flexibility and Sustainability Funding is allocated to research-active NHS organisations in proportion to the total amount of other NIHR income received by that organisation.
The purpose is to enable the NHS to attract, develop and retain high-quality research, clinical and support staff by supporting some or all the research-related component of an NIHR Faculty member's salary where that component is not already provided by other research funding sources.
The aim is a quality-driven fund that allows for local discretion and management of people to support and develop patient and people driven research.
NIHR Flexibility and Sustainability Funding will provide for salary costs of NIHR Faculty in clearly defined circumstances. It will only support salary costs, including direct (i.e. salary) and indirect (e.g. payroll and HR) costs. It will not fund running costs.
NIHR Flexibility and Sustainability Funding can be used to support the salary costs of the following:
- the component of an NIHR Faculty member's salary which is not covered by other NIHR sources
- new staff, who are expected to be Faculty members, but who have not yet obtained funding from the other NIHR sources
- existing Faculty members who are "between grants"
- the time Faculty members spend in preparing grant proposals (not Faculty Associates)
- the time Faculty members spend in contributing to the wider research endeavour (e.g. membership of peer review panels)
- the research-related time of scientific and technical staff who are supporting Faculty members in their NIHR-related work
- the research-related time of NHS-employed administrative and secretarial staff who are supporting Faculty members in their NIHR-related work
