Research Centres

NIHR Research Centres, have been established within our leading NHS and university partnerships to drive progress in:
  • translating innovation in biomedicine into NHS practice
  • quality and safety standards in the NHS
Funding is provided on a five-year cycle and relates directly to the quality, scale and nature of research activity. Funds have been awarded through competition and peer review.

NIHR Biomedical Research Centres
Biomedical Research Centres drive innovation in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of ill-health and to translate advances in biomedical research into NHS practice.

NIHR Patient Safety & Service Quality Reseach Centres

As centres of international expertise, the NIHR Patient Safety & Service Quality Research Centres bring together NHS professionals with a wide range of research disciplines. Their focus is to investigate ways to improve the safety, quality and effectiveness of the services the NHS provides to its patients and the public.

UKCRC Public Health Research Centres of Excellence
Working with other major research funders across the UK under the umbrella of the UK Clinical Research Collaboration, five UKCRC Public Health Research Centres of Excellence have been created. These bring together leading researchers with practitioners, policymakers and members of the public to tackle complex public health issues.
