Technology PlatformsIncreasingly, ground-breaking research that keeps England at the forefront of international developments requires access to cutting-edge technology. Because access is currently inadequate across the country, we have dedicated a funding stream to pay the costs of selected key technology platforms.
The initial focus will be on diagnostic imaging which has been identified as the most critical need in a recent survey of NHS providers and the Academy of Medical Sciences). Over time, funding will be made available for other technology platforms, including high-throughput genetic screening, micro-array technology to help researchers understand fundamental aspects of human growth and development as well as explore underlying genetic causes of many human diseases, and proteomics, the study of the structure and function of proteins in the human body.
All NHS providers that have substantial technology platforms are eligible to apply for funding. Applications will be assessed by the Department of Health R&D Directorate.
The number of NHS providers that will be funded will depend on the number and quality of applications received.
The total funding in the first round for diagnostic imaging will be £8 million per year. This will rise to a steady state of £50 million a year over the next three years.
