The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has launched a new, open, two-stage competition to refresh and renew the membership of the School for Social Care Research (SSCR) and is inviting appropriate academic institutions to submit an application.

The NIHR SSCR was established in February 2009, as a partnership between six leading social care research centres in England. The location of the School within the NIHR is recognition of the significant contribution that social care makes to the nation's health. One of the main purposes in establishing the NIHR SSCR was to provide a focus for social care research within the NIHR and to promote the general development of social care research.

The NIHR currently provides funding to the School that will continue until April 2014. From May 2014, NIHR funding of £3m a year (up to £15 million over a five-year period) will be awarded through open competition to the NIHR SSCR. The funding for the School will run for five years.

The deadline for receipt of Stage 1 applications is 11 September 2013 at 1.00pm.
