Join Dementia Research
Dementia affects 850,000 people in the UK. The only way to beat the condition is through research.
Join Dementia Research is a UK-wide service that makes it easy for anyone, with or without memory problems, to take part in dementia research and help accelerate progress in this vital area.
- register your interest in taking part in research
- find suitable studies in your area
- let researchers know that you might be interested in taking part in their research
The service is funded by the Department of Health and it is delivered in a partnership with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Alzheimer Scotland, Alzheimer’s Research UK and Alzheimer’s Society.
How do I sign up?
People with dementia, their carers and anyone interested in participating in dementia research can register online, by post or over the phone. It is also possible to sign up on behalf of a loved one, who may find it difficult to register themselves or manage their own account.
To register, all you need to provide is some basic contact and health information which will allow you to matched to local studies where the researchers are looking for people just like you. You can then review the studies on a case-by-case basis and identify which ones you are interested in. The researchers will be in touch before you both confirm whether you will take part in any particular study.
Registering means you can be alerted of new research that you can get involved with as soon as it's set up with the service. With new studies being added all the time, this makes it even easier for you to take part in research. To have the best chance of matching to studies, all you need to do is make sure your information in Join Dementia Research is up to date.
Why was the service developed?
One of the big challenges researchers face today is finding the right people to participate in their studies. At the same time, many people want to become involved in dementia research, but don't know where to find out about it, or how to become involved. Join Dementia Research helps to overcome both these barriers.
Not only that, but the service will play a key role in delivering against the Government’s Challenge on Dementia. This sets the ambition that by 2020, England should be the best country in the world for dementia care and support and the best place in the world to undertake research into dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases.
Our objective is to:
- increase the number of people with dementia and their carers participating in dementia research
- Support 25 per cent of people diagnosed with dementia to register on Join Dementia Research by 2020

I work with people with dementia and their carers, how can I connect them with Join Dementia Research?
Our goal is to make it possible for anyone and everyone who wants to be involved in dementia research to have that opportunity. This in turn will help improve our understanding of dementia, as well as shape services and treatments available to patients in the NHS. You can help us achieve this by raising awareness with colleagues, patients, and carers. Take a look at our information for healthcare professionals for tips, ideas and downloadable tools.
