Public involvement in Reviewing Proposals

The NIHR needs members of the public with experience or understanding of dementia to review the research proposals so that we can get a ‘first hand experience’ perspective on the research applications. To do this you might:

  • be experiencing the early stages of dementia
  • be caring for or have cared for a person with dementia
  • have direct experience of the impact of dementia
  • be a member of, or connected to, an organisation that supports or represents people with dementia and their carers.

We are not looking for people who are working as health or care professionals unless they also fall into one of the above categories. Clinical, scientific and technical specialists provide separate reviews, and are welcome to apply to join our pool of expert referees.

Reviewing a proposal involves reading the paperwork completed by the researchers who are applying for the funding and commenting on the proposal. The NIHR provides guidance for undertaking this work and pays a fee for the review work that you undertake. You may be asked to review more than one proposal, if you are able. These reviews need to be completed between late autumn 2011 and spring 2012.

Conflict of interest
If you have previously been involved in the design or development of a research proposal, you may have a conflict of interest, if you wish to review proposals. Please refer to the conflict of interest guidance.
