Dr Gail Marzetti

Dr Gail Marzetti is Director of Science, Research and Evidence at the Department of Health and Social Care. She leads the NIHR under the direction of Prof Lucy Chappell. Gail also has responsibility for policy research and science policy.

Gail is a senior civil servant with 25 years of experience across a range of policy areas. She was previously Director of Refugees and Head of International Workforce at DHSC. In this role, she was responsible for ensuring that partnerships with source countries were ethical, that people in the international workforce were able to develop their careers in the UK, and that refugees and displaced people were given employment opportunities.

Prior to this, Gail worked for the Department for International Development (DfID) for over 20 years. This included six years as one of the team that established DfID’s Research and Evidence Division, putting evidence at the heart of policy and programmes. More recently she was head of DfID Myanmar for two years, leading the UK response to the Rohingya crisis, and before that head of DfID Nepal. She has also worked in Brazil, Mozambique, India and Kenya as well as in the UK offices working in the United Nations department and Corporate Strategy Group.

In her early career, Gail was a food security expert working in conflict and post conflict reconstruction. She holds a PhD from the Institute for Development Policy and Management at Manchester University.
