Patient and Public involvement in research

Involving the public in our work is a key organisational goal for the Evaluations Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre. Research that reflects the needs and views of the public is more likely to produce results that can be used to improve health and social care.

Not all of the research we fund is about high tech medicine or clinical interventions. Some projects look at the health of whole communities or at how health and social care services are best organised for people who may need them. We need the opinions and personal experience of members of the public, patients and carers to add to the advice we receive from clinicians, researchers and other professionals.

  • 38 public members contribute to funding decisions through membership on expert advisory groups.
  • Over 700 public contributors assess applications, research briefs and commissioning briefs, ensuring that studies are relevant and appropriately designed.
