NIHR Academy Members get access to bespoke events and professional development opportunities in the health and social care researcher community.

Who is an NIHR Academy Member?

You automatically become an NIHR Academy Member when you start:

  • an NIHR personal career development award
  • an NIHR institutional career development award
  • training within NIHR infrastructure or capacity building structures

If you are playing an active or formal role supporting those on an academic path, you may meet the eligibility for membership. For example, you could be an Academic Career Development Lead (ACD) within NIHR infrastructure.

NIHR Global Health Research Academy Member 

You become an NIHR Global Health Research Academy Member when you receive funding or support from an NIHR Global Health Research Programme.

NIHR Academy Members are part of a vibrant health and social care researcher community. They come from a range of professions and backgrounds. They work in different settings with varied research interests. As an NIHR Academy Member, you have access to bespoke events and professional development opportunities.

Newsletter

We promote member opportunities such as our events and webinars through our monthly newsletter. You will receive this directly if you are a personal award holder. 

If you're training within NIHR, your Academic Career Development Lead will share the newsletter with you.

Professional development for NIHR Academy Members

Future Focused Leadership Programme

Improve your management and leadership in health and care research. This bespoke programme takes place over 12 months through residential workshops, webinars and online modules. You'll need to be a postdoctoral researcher to apply.

Mentoring Programme

You can apply for a mentor for up to 12 months to support your career development. You'll need to be in the final year of your doctorate or a postdoctoral researcher to apply.

NIHR Reviewer Development Scheme

You could gain experience by peer reviewing for our funding programmes. You'll need to be in the final year of your doctorate or a postdoctoral researcher to apply.

NIHR Academy events and webinars

Webinars and workshops

Our webinars cover topics such as how to apply to a training programme. Registration is open to all. Our leadership workshops will develop your practical tools and techniques. You'll need to be a member to attend.

Members’ Conference

Our conference is our flagship event and you'll need to be an Academy Member to attend. You'll hear from inspirational speakers, network with peers and develop a range of skills.

Leadership e-learning

Our e-learning modules enhance health and care research professionals' leadership and management skills.

Event fund

If you're a postdoctoral Academy Member, you could apply for event funding. Your event must promote NIHR career development awards.

Member voices group

This group provides feedback on NIHR's strategic direction. Members report real-time issues experienced by early career researchers. The representatives are Academy Members from a range of career stages.

NIHR Academy Forum

This advisory group is made up of a wide range of stakeholders. This includes Academy Member representatives, funding committee chairs and NIHR directors. They develop plans for the direction the Academy will take.

Funding committees

Funding committees support the development of our training programmes. They assess applications and make funding recommendations based on quality.
