Future Focused Leadership Programme - FAQ

Am I a NIHR Academy Member?

We would consider you a NIHR Academy Member if you are:

  1.  In receipt of funding from NIHR Academy, i.e. one of our fellowships.

or

  1. Based in NIHR Infrastructure or an NIHR School and meet all of the following criteria:
  • You are undertaking a formal training/career development award, which should be competitive, include a training plan and have a defined end point - which could be an application for further funding.
  • You receive at least 25% funding by the NIHR Infrastructure for salary/stipend over the lifetime of the award. For CLAHRC trainees, NIHR CLAHRC funding plus matched funding should equal at least 25%.
  • You are hosted in a setting with a remit for research capacity development. This refers to BRCs, CLAHRCs, PSTRCs or SPCR.

How do I know if I am eligible for the Leaders stream?

We do not specify particular roles that are / are not eligible. You are eligible if you can demonstrate that you are leading nationally for NIHR at a senior level, collaborating with others outside of your host organisation and leading initiatives that help fulfil NIHR strategic aims.

My NIHR Academy award will come to an end in 2020 so am I still eligible to apply for the Emerging Leaders stream?

Your current post-doctoral funding or NIHR personal award must be active for the majority of the duration of the leadership programme, e.g. for Cohort 1 your award should not end before 31 May 2020 and for Cohort 2 your award should not end before 31 September 2020.

Am I eligible if I attended the previous Leadership programme, delivered by Ashridge?

The target audiences for each stream of the programme are the same and the aims of the new programme are similar so you may not get anything new from this programme. We would therefore prioritise those who have not accessed that stream previously.

If you completed the trainee stream previously and are now in a role where you are leading nationally for NIHR you are eligible to apply for the Leaders stream.

As part of the wider Leaders Support and Development Programme, online learning resources will also be available on NIHR Learn from later this year, and participants in the previous programme may find these useful and relevant to their current NIHR role.

How does the new programme differ from the previous leadership programme delivered by Ashridge?

The aims of the programme are very similar to the previous programme delivered by Ashridge, however with it being a new supplier the tone and content will be different. The new programme will also be incorporating personal coaching using virtual reality.

Where will the residentials be and how do I book travel?

Travel plans will need to be booked following your normal travel procedure and will be at your own/host institution’s cost unless you are a public member. Please discuss these arrangements with your supervisor.

Included in the programme:

  • Day 1 - Refreshments, lunch, evening meal and overnight accommodation
  • Day 2 - Breakfast, refreshments and lunch
