NIHR statement on ODA funding for its Global Health Research Portfolio

Contents

Following the Chancellor’s announcement that Official Development Assistance (ODA) has been reduced from 0.7% to 0.5% of Gross National Income, we are working through the implications for our ODA-funded Global Health Research Portfolio.

Like other ODA research funders, we have received a reduced budget and are making tough decisions to ensure this is most effectively allocated. It will take time to fully understand the impact of this budget cut on our portfolio, including where we fund with others and where we may need to reduce our ambitions.

Our priority will be protecting existing research projects wherever possible.

Looking ahead, the NIHR remains fully committed to funding high-quality research for the benefit of people in low and middle income countries and building research capacity in the UK and overseas.

Consequently, NIHR Global Health Research funding calls remain open. Recognising the challenges and long timescales in setting up new research projects and programmes, these future-focused calls are not competing for funding with existing projects and applicants should proceed with their applications as planned.
