We are inviting NIHR research leaders to take part in a new immersive, bitesize, virtual leadership journey to support you in preparing to lead the organisation in the years ahead. This is a pilot programme which we developed based on the twelve-month NIHR Future Focused Leadership Programme (FFLP). The programme will enable us to extend our leadership development provision to more NIHR leaders.

The highly interactive programme comprises virtual training, peer coaching, self-directed learning and facilitated action learning, enabling you to build connections across the NIHR.

The programme is based on the NIHR leadership model that has been developed specifically for the organisation based on the following competencies:

Leading Self: compassionate to self and others, resilient achiever, demonstrates a clear vision

Leading Others: Nurture – develops others, empowers others, values inclusion; Collaborate – builds rapport, maintains relationships, leverages expertise; Influence – influences with impact, inspires others, listens intently, demonstrates courage

Leading Beyond Authority: strategically aware, seizes opportunities, responds with agility, navigates political landscapes

During the programme you will:

  • Develop an understanding of the ‘NIHR Leadership Pillars’ and understand what it takes to be an effective leader
  • Start to explore how you can role model these ways of working and help embed them into the NIHR culture
  • Further develop your network through collaborating and working with fellow NIHR leaders

The programme comprises three sessions which take place over the course of three months, as follows:

Session 1: Kick off and connect, on Thursday 14 October from 11am to 12 noon

Session 2: Nurture others and lead self, on Wednesday 3 November from 9.30am to 12.30pm

Session 3: Participate in a 90-minute action learning session, on Wednesday 12 January at 9am, 11.30am or 3pm

To get the most out of this leadership programme you will also be invited to watch two short pre-recorded webinars during the course. Prior to the first session, we will ask you to prepare some reflections on your own experiences and the attributes of an effective leader within research, health and social care.

To be eligible to participate in the programme you will be either an early career researcher leading a research team and on an academic track in receipt of an NIHR Academy award, or in a mid to senior leadership role within the NIHR, based in a coordinating centre or infrastructure.

Please submit our expression of interest form to apply for a place, no later than 12 noon on Thursday 30 September.

Places are limited to 15, and we will inform you whether you have a place on the course by 5pm on Wednesday 6 October.

We will select participants for the programme to ensure broad inclusive participation that reflects the breadth of the NIHR leadership population.

There is currently one further opportunity to apply for this course, starting on 13 January 2022. Please visit the event listing for further details.

Note: The programme is free to attend for eligible applicants. Participating in this programme does not preclude you from submitting an application for the year long Future Focused Leadership programme (FFLP). However, if you have already participated in the FFLP in recent years this programme will not be applicable to you.
