NHS 75: Shape the future

The NHS is celebrating its 75th birthday this year. Join our campaign as we recognise how NIHR research contributes to the NHS, saving lives and money.

The next phase of the campaign starts in November to encourage healthcare professionals in the NHS to pursue a career in research, highlighting development and support opportunities.

What is your role?

 NIHR Young Research Champion. Researcher, Paediatric Neurosurgery, at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

What is your advice to anyone volunteering in health and care?

Go for it. It can be challenging but if you want to make new friends and learn about research, being a young research champion is the best. You’ll develop new skills like public speaking, leadership skills and team working. 

How would you describe the NHS in one word?

Underappreciated.

Shahima Begum

What is your role?

Engagement and Communications Lead for the NIHR ARC Yorkshire and Humber and the Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

What do you enjoy most about it?

The people I work with at the Bradford Institute for Health Research are key to why I love my job so much. It’s an incredibly supportive and kind environment here and this has allowed me to gain new skills and grow my career in this way. 

How would you describe the NHS in one word?

Hard-working.

Dr Sam Debbage

What is your role?

Research Capacity Building lead,  NIHR ARC Yorkshire and Humber, Director of Education and Research, Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Foudation Trust.

What do you enjoy most about it?

I enjoy working with people, across a number of organisations and on different agendas with the aim of making a difference to people’s lives. I work closely with senior leaders to prioritise the development of our people.
