HEE/NIHR Senior Clinical Lectureship

ICA Senior Clinical Lectureship

Round 4 Stage 1 Competition has closed

The HEE/NIHR Senior Clinical Lectureship (SCL) scheme represents the most senior level of the HEE/NIHR ICA career pathway. SCL awards are intended to support outstanding individuals who are currently independent researchers and can demonstrate the potential to become academic and research leaders within 5 years.  Applicants require support from both an English NHS / healthcare organisation and an English higher education institution, and should propose to divide their time equally between their clinical and academic commitments. An SCL is expected to enhance existing career opportunities for both the award holder and others in health related research, and to support the development of collaborative partnerships within and between HEIs and the NHS.

Applicants must have been awarded a research doctorate (PhD) and have at least 5 years’ experience of clinical practice at the time of application. Prospective applicants with less than 5 years' WTE post-doctoral research experience are recommended to consider applying for a HEE/NIHR ICA Clinical Lectureship.

Posts are co-funded by the employing organisations, which will provide at least 50% of the Senior Clinical Lecturer's salary. The remaining portion of salary costs, the research costs and the training/development costs will be met by the award.

All applicants must belong to one of the eligible professions and ensure that their proposed research project is compatible with the published NIHR remit and the HEE priorities.

Eligibility for the Senior Clinical Lectureship scheme will now be extended to include Professional Doctorate graduates, providing they can evidence the quality and proportionality of research education, training and experience gained over the course of their professional doctorate studies.  Prospective applicants who hold a professional doctorate should refer to the professional doctorate eligibility criteria and follow the instructions in this document if they meet the criteria and would like their eligibility to be assessed.

2 Stage Competition

The application process for the Senior Clinical Lectureship competition is now 2-stage and uses an adapted version of the NIHR Standard Application Forms (SAF).  The Stage 1 form must be submitted by 1pm on Thursday 19th April 2018. If an application is shortlisted for interview by the Review Panel following peer review, applicants will be invited to complete the Stage 2 application form in advance of attending for interview.

Further information regarding the NIHR SAF and the two stage application process is available the General Information on Training Programmes section of the NIHR website.
