Research and Innovation for Global Health Transformation (RIGHT) - Call 1

Application dates: 21 June 2018 to 01 August 2018

Applications are invited for Call 1 of the new NIHR Research and Innovation for Global Health Transformation (RIGHT) programme. Delivering challenge-led research that will primarily benefit the health and wealth of the poorest individuals living in low and middle income countries (LMICs), the RIGHT programme forms part of the nation's commitment to Official Development Assistance (ODA) and complements recent investment in NIHR Global Health Research Groups and Units.

RIGHT is a two stage competition, subject to independent peer review and international panel assessment at both stages. The total amount of NIHR funding available for this competition is up to £30 million. Awards will typically range between £3m-5m over 3-4 years for ODA-eligible research to start in June 2019.

Key areas

In Call 1, the programme seeks to fund high quality research ideas in three areas of unmet need and underinvestment in LMICs – epilepsy, infection-related cancer and severe stigmatising skin diseases.

Who can apply

Applications are invited from UK-based (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland) Higher Education Institutions, and research institutes. Non-UK institutions in High-Income Countries can be included in the application if there is a strong justification as to why the expertise they are bringing cannot be found in the UK or in an LMIC. Evidence for this needs to be provided in the application. Applications from joint groupings of UK institutions will be considered, though a lead UK institution must be specified.

Support for applicants

Applicants successful at Stage 1 and invited to submit a Stage 2 application will be eligible to apply for funding of up to £10,000 to support proposal and partnership development during the Stage 2 application drafting process.

An FAQ document to support the Guidance for Applicants will be compiled and regularly updated and made available here and on the RIGHT programme page. See also the supporting information below.

Webinars and a workshop for applicants are also planned to provide support on community and public involvement and ensuring impact of research. Dates and details will also be posted as above.

How to apply

The closing date/time for submission of an application is 1 August 2018 at 13:00 through our system at https://ccfrms.nihr.ac.uk

Those who wish to submit an application in this call should refer to the Guidance for Applicants. Research must be focused on improving the health and welfare of the poorest and most vulnerable people in LMICs. In order to be eligible to receive ODA funding, applications must demonstrate how they meet ODA compliance criteria.

Any enquiries should be sent to ccf-globalhealth@nihr.ac.uk.
