Advanced Fellowship Round 4

The NIHR Advanced Fellowship funds post-doctoral individuals from a range of health and social care professions who haven’t yet been awarded a chair. Whether you are someone who has recently been or about to be awarded a PhD, or someone with several years of post-doctoral experience, you could be eligible to apply for an Advanced Fellowship.

The Fellowship funds:

  • full salary support, including protected time to concentrate on research
  • research costs
  • a bespoke training and development programme to meet individual needs

Applicants who are active clinicians or social workers can request for up to 40% of their time to be dedicated to clinical service/development/practice, which will be covered by the Fellowship.

Full details of the remit of research funded by the NIHR and eligibility criteria can be found in the guidance notes.

We are aware that many will find submitting an application for a NIHR Advanced Fellowship during this time quite challenging; so to simplify the application process, we have extended the closing date for applications by two months. We've also removed the requirement for participants, signatories and the host organisation statement at application stage.

Charity partnerships

The NIHR Academy is offering jointly funded NIHR Charity Partnership Fellowships for this Round with the following charities:

The guidance notes provide specific eligibility criteria for the partnerships. Contact details for each charity, and applicants are encouraged to contact the relevant charity partner to discuss their research area of interest before applying.

Industry partnership

The NIHR Academy is also offering a jointly funded NIHR Industry Partnership Fellowship for this Round by  partnering with Pfizer. Full details are available in the guidance notes.

EME and Advanced Fellowship Joint Application

A collaboration with the Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation (EME) Programme offers NIHR Advanced Fellowship applicants the opportunity to apply for separate project funding to deliver and gain experience of leading a clinical study. We recognise that NIHR Advanced Fellowships award cannot always support the research costs of a large clinical study. Therefore this pilot supports the development of capacity and expertise in conducting clinical trials. Further information can be found in the guidance notes.
