Before applying please carefully review:
  • ICA PCAF Applicant Guidance Notes – the Applicant Guidance Notes are available throughout the year, however new Applicant Guidance Notes are published to accompany each competition (coming soon). Applicants must ensure they are referring to the most recent guidance if submitting an application.
  • ICA PCAF Round 3 Chairs' Report – published following the completion of each scheme competition, the report summarises common weaknesses that were noted by the Selection Committee and provides advice for prospective applicants.

The HEE/NIHR ICA Pre-doctoral Clinical Academic Fellowship (PCAF) scheme supports early career researchers to become competitive applicants for a doctoral level research training fellowship.

ICA PCAFs support healthcare professionals who are not doctors or dentists. A full list of ICA eligible professions is available.

PCAF candidates may:
  • have little formal academic training/ research experience or
  • have completed some Masters level training or
  • have completed a Masters level qualification or
  • require Masters level training/ a full Masters
However, all applicants must be committed to a career as a clinical academic.
 
The PCAF scheme offers two distinct funding offers, which follow the same application process. You will be asked to specify which funding stream you would like to apply for.

Details

Funding to support the submission of a doctoral fellowship application and to undertake Masters-level training 

Funding to support submission of a doctoral fellowship application and to undertake some training

Funding scope

  • salary costs to cover the time undertaking the Fellowship

  • up to £5,000 towards Masters level training and associated travel and subsistence

  • up to £1,000 for conference/meeting fees and associated travel and subsistence

  • supervision and mentorship costs up to £1,000

  • salary costs to cover the time undertaking the Fellowship

  • up to £500 for conference / meeting fees and associated travel and subsistence

  • up to £400 for formal courses and associated travel and subsistence

  • supervision and Mentorship costs up to £500

Structure

  • full-time for 12 months (5 days per week)

  • part-time over 24 months (2.5 days per week, 0.5 WTE)

  • part-time over 30 months (2 days per week, 0.4 WTE)

  • 4 days per week for 6 months (0.8 WTE)

  • 2 days per week for 12 months (0.4 WTE)

Charity partnership

Pharmacists can apply for a PCAF Charity Partnership Fellowship jointly funded by Pharmacy Research UK. The guidance notes will provide specific details including eligibility criteria.
