The NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) is a clinical specialty training post in medicine that incorporates academic training. The NIHR has allocated funding for 250 ACFs for recruitment in 2020/1, through the Integrated Academic Training (IAT) Programme.
The post has a standard duration of 3 years (up to 4 years for GPs). As an NIHR ACF you will have access to Masters-level research training to develop academic skills and spend 25% of your time in research or educationalist training. Forty percent of the ACF posts have programmes of research aligned with NIHR IAT Priority Research Themes. The research areas for the remaining 60% of the ACF posts will be based on local expertise and the applicant's individual interests.
Full details, including the eligibility criteria for the NIHR ACF, are available in the 2020 Academic Clinical Fellowship (Medical) Guidance Document.
The 2020 NIHR ACFs are available from 07 October 2019, with award starting dates between 01 April 2020 and 31 March 2021.
Please note – the majority of the 2020 NIHR ACF posts have now been filled. Any remaining posts may be advertised with the 2021 posts from 1 October 2020. However, successful candidates for a 2020 post will have to start by 31 March 2021.
Candidates for NIHR ACFs apply via the online application system Oriel, not the NIHR, because recruitment is managed by Health Education England (HEE) Local Offices.
