The NIHR is launching a new open competition for infrastructure in applied health and care to designate and fund NIHR Applied Research Collaborations (ARCs) in England. Eligible NHS organisations may submit one application for funding up to £16.3m over five years from 1 April 2026.

The purpose of the NIHR ARCs is to undertake high-quality applied health, public health and social care research with a focus on generalisable learning at a regional and national level. Working closely with stakeholders including the Integrated Care Systems (ICSs), the Health Innovation Networks (HINs) and other NIHR infrastructure, the ARCs will also support knowledge mobilisation and implementation of research-based evidence to ensure effective interventions and models of care can be scaled nationally thereby maximising the impact of research.

The NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Guidance is available on the NIHR website. Applications will be open from Wednesday 6 November 2024. 

Please note applications must be submitted through the NIHR Research Management System (RMS) before 13:00 on Wednesday 29 January 2025.

A virtual Q&A webinar for this scheme will take place on Friday 22 November 2024 from 10 am to 12 pm for potential applicants. Register for the NIHR Applied Research Collaborations (ARCs) 2024 webinar.

A recording and a copy of the slides will be made available upon request after the webinar, by contacting the Infrastructure team at infrastructure@nihr.ac.uk. 

 

We are now accepting questions on the remit and aims of the scheme via our Frequently Asked Questions form. 

Answers to general frequently asked questions will be available on the NIHR website. The page will regularly be updated on the website until approximately two weeks before call close. For any queries on the RMS, please email infrastructure@nihr.ac.uk.

This competition opens on Wednesday 6 November 2024, and an application link will be available on that day.
