The NIHR ICA Pre-doctoral Clinical and Practitioner Academic Fellowship (PCAF) scheme supports early career researchers to become competitive applicants for a doctoral level research training fellowship.
PCAFs support health and social care professionals who are not doctors or dentists. A full list of ICA eligible professions is available.
PCAF candidates may:
- have little formal academic training/ research experience or
- have completed some Masters level training or
- have completed a Masters level qualification or
- require Masters level training/ a full Masters
However, all applicants must be committed to a career as a practitioner academic.
The PCAF scheme offers two distinct funding offers, which follow the same application process. You will be asked to specify which funding stream you would like to apply for, the PCAF or the PCAF Bridge. More information is available on the ICA Programme page.
The NIHR partners with charities to jointly fund fellowships. The charity partners for this round are:
- British Oncology Pharmacy Association
- Cystic Fibrosis Trust
- Kidney Research UK
- Moorfields Eye Charity
- Pharmacy Research UK
- Stroke Association
Some partnership opportunities are open to all ICA professions but are looking for specific research areas, whereas others will support specific ICA professions working in any research area. The guidance notes will provide further specific details including eligibility criteria for each partnership opportunity.
