Clinical Research Network appoints new Renal Specialty Group Lead

Date: 11 June 2019

The Clinical Research Network (CRN) South London has appointed Dr Richard Hull as the network’s new Renal Specialty Group Lead.

Dr Hull is a Consultant Nephrologist at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He replaces Professor Iain MacDougall in the role, who stepped down after 11 years in post. Richard said:

“I am really excited to be taking on this role. I hope I will be able to build upon my successes of the last few years, a key driver of which was collaborative working with renal and urology colleagues across CRN South Thames.

“I hope we can continue to increase access to clinical research for patients and clinicians and to continue our successful delivery of studies in our area.”

Dr Hull looks after a cohort of haemodialysis patients and manages renal ward inpatients. His outpatient work focuses on his specialist interest of autoimmune renal disease as well as general nephrology.

He studied Medicine at the University of Cambridge and became a member of the Royal College of Physicians during his early postgraduate training at Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust.

He went on to complete his specialist training in renal medicine in the South Thames Renal Programme which included his appointment as a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD fellow at the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre, Imperial College London.

The consultant revealed that his research thesis, which led to a Doctor of Philosophy Award in June 2012, triggered his ongoing interest in autoimmune renal disease.

The Renal Disorders specialty sits with CRN South London’s Division 2 portfolio, and Research Delivery Manager for Division 2 Elisabeth Sullivan said: “I am delighted to welcome Richard to the network, and look forward to working with him in continuing to increase access to renal disorder research for patients and clinicians throughout our region.

"I'd also like to say thank you to Professor MacDougall for his hard work over the last 11 years, and would like to wish him all the best for the future."
