NIHR welcomes life sciences strategy to make UK ‘world-leading’

Date: 30 August 2017

A package of proposals to make the UK’s life sciences industry ‘world leading’ has been welcomed by the NIHR, the body dedicated to improving the health and wealth of the nation through research.

The Life Sciences Industrial Strategy includes a number of recommendations to help the UK become the home of clinical research and medical innovation.

The industrial strategy calls for increased funding for research, a 50% increase in the number of clinical trials over the next five years, collaboration between industry and the NHS to enable service transformation, and continued improvement in patient outcomes.

The Government-commissioned report was developed by Sir John Bell in consultation with the Life Sciences Industrial Strategy Board - with representation from across the life sciences industry and structure in the UK.

The NIHR is dedicated to funding research and working with the life sciences industry to help patients gain earlier access to breakthrough treatments and we welcome the industrial strategy’s focus. We are poised to work with industry and the NHS to take forward the Government’s response to the report, and ensure the UK remains at the forefront of international research.
