International Year of the Nurse and Midwife 2020

2020 international year of the nurse and midwife

Published: 20 January 2020

The World Health Organization has dedicated 2020 to nurses and midwives, providing a "once in a generation opportunity" to showcase the professions. It chose the theme to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale.

Dr Jonathan Sheffield OBE, Chief Executive Officer, NIHR Clinical Research Network, said:

"Nurses and midwives are at the heart of healthcare and play a crucial role in clinical research. International Year of the Nurse and Midwife is an opportunity to show how clinical research nurses and midwives are transforming treatment in the NHS and beyond.

"It's also an opportunity to thank our incredible nurses and midwives for their expertise, enthusiasm and tireless commitment to improving the quality of patient care through research."

Dr Sharon Barrett, NIHR Interim Associate Director of Nursing and 70@70 Programme Director, said:

"Research is vital to improving the health and wealth of the nation and this year is an opportunity to celebrate the important work of nurses and midwives in research.

"Nurses and midwives are by far the largest group of health care professionals and have such an important contribution to make to research delivery. This is why last year we launched the NIHR's flagship 70@70 senior nurse and midwife research leader programme, geared toward strengthening the research voice and influence of nurses and midwives in health and social care settings.

"Right now, our 70 senior nurse and midwife research leaders are influencing policy makers in the NHS and NIHR, ensuring research evidence is put into practice and making sure patients gain access to research focused on their needs."
