Jenny Teke, Lead Research Nurse and Research and Development Manager at Medway Community Healthcare (MCH) won the 2019 Rising Star Award at CRN Kent, Surrey and Sussex Partner Awards.
The nomination said – “As new Lead Nurse at MCH, Jenny has really shown promise and leadership. Jenny led on taking action to respond to findings from the Patient Research Experience Survey (PRES) in 2018/19 to improve the service based on patient feedback. Jenny not only collected patient responses to the survey and analysed them personally, but when noting there was an area requiring improvement, put together an improvement programme to ensure patients were aware MCH is a research active organisation. A new icon showing that the organisation is ‘research active’ now appears on their website, letterheads and on all their promotional materials. Her confidence and eloquence at business planning in describing her outreach work with hospices and others was noted and appreciated.”
To encourage survey engagement, the research and development team reached out to research participants after their first visit by sending personalised letters asking them to complete the PRES. A copy of the survey and a self-addressed envelope was included but participants also had the option to complete the survey online. The letters used ‘heartwarming’ language, informing the participants of how valuable their contribution was and how participation in the study allows MCH to carry out important research.
Jenny said: “I’m humbled and very pleased to receive this recognition. Research has always been my passion and I‘m delighted to be able to give patients and members of the public the opportunity to get involved in research. I always say – today’s medicine was yesterday’s research and so tomorrow’s medicine is today’s research.”
Chris Gedge, Head of Research and Design at MCH says: “I’m absolutely over the moon that Jenny has received the recognition she deserves for all the hard work and effort she has put it. She has moved into a new organisation and hit the ground running – taking MCH to the next level with our research. It feels like she has been here for years. Massive congratulations to her.”
Sarah Edwards, CRN Kent, Surrey and Sussex Research Delivery Manager supporting Any Qualified Providers (AQP) says: “It's been a pleasure working with Jenny. She is committed to offering patients in Medway the opportunity to be involved in research and ensuring they receive the best possible experience.”
