New charity partnerships for NIHR Academy

Two new charities join four others to provide NIHR Charity Partnership Fellowships for researchers. Wellbeing of Women and Dunhill Medical Trust are now providing career development opportunities for doctoral and post-doctoral researchers through the NIHR Academy’s Fellowship Programme. The other charities include Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Charitable Trust, Kidney Research UK, Moorfields Eye Charity and Castang Foundation.

All NIHR Fellowships provide the opportunity to undertake impactful research that will underpin the researcher’s development as an independent future leader. NIHR Charity Partnership Fellowships also offer researchers the opportunity to be part of the charity’s active and supportive community, drawing on the enormous benefits and opportunities of cross-sector working including valuable input from patient groups.

Jeremy Barratt, Head of Research at Wellbeing of Women, said, “We’re excited to announce our new partnership with the NIHR to support a Doctoral Fellowship. This award will help propel a researcher’s development to become a future academic leader and build capacity in the field of women’s reproductive and gynaecological health.”

Professor Gary Frost, Chair of the NIHR Doctoral Fellowship selection committee, said, “There are very few examples of win–win situations but the formation of the Partnership Fellowships is undoubtedly one. It is a win for the fellow who will hold one of the Partnership Fellowships as they have the potential of a broader, more diverse and richer doctoral experience. For the NIHR and the partner organisations it is a win as it increases the diversity of the training portfolio and enhances the depth of doctoral training for the health researchers of tomorrow.”

This is the second year that the NIHR Academy has partnered with charities to provide the Fellowship Programme. Researchers can also apply for a charity partnership through the HEE/NIHR Integrated Clinical Academic (ICA) Programme.
