NIHR partners with the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene to fund global health early career researchers

Published: 24 March 2020

The NIHR has partnered with the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH) to fund small grants to early career global health researchers worldwide.

The NIHR Global Health Research programme will provide funding for up to 100 small grants to researchers in tropical medicine or global health, as part of RSTMH’s 2020 small grants programme.

The purpose of the small grants, which are up to £5,000 each, is to enable early career researchers and global health professionals to undertake clinical or scientific research or fieldwork, as stand-alone projects or distinct elements within larger projects. The grants are aimed in particular at researchers who have not received funding in their own name before.

Dr Val Snewin, Head of Global Health Research Partnerships, NIHR Global Health Research programme, Department of Health and Social Care, said: "We're pleased to announce that the NIHR Global Health Research programme is partnering once again with the RSTMH on their small grants programme.

“RSTMH has a strong track record in providing grants to early career researchers, making this partnership a key strand of NIHR's work in developing career pathways in global health research. This year we're increasing our funding contribution to ensure more high quality applicants have the opportunity to develop skills to tackle global health research challenges."

A spokesperson for RSTMH said: “This NIHR funding is an enormous boost to this unique programme and we’re delighted to be working with them, ensuring that the pipeline of new research across tropical medicine and global health is further bolstered.

“We hope this support, along with that of International Trachoma Initiative (ITI) and RSTMH’s own contribution, will mean all applications that pass the assessment process will be able to be provided with funds.”

The deadline for applications is 5pm 27 April 2020.
