NIHR publishes its 2021-22 annual report

NIHR Annual Report 2021/2022

Published: 20 December 2022

The NIHR has today published its annual report and accounts, highlighting milestones and achievements during the 2021-22 financial year.

The NIHR invested heavily in research into COVID-19 during this time period. Over £92m was spent on a range of studies, many in partnership with UK Research and Innovation. The Vaccines Taskforce continued to support NIHR research into COVID-19, providing over £45m of additional budget.

NIHR spend increased by around 8% in 2021-22 compared to the previous year. This was largely due to additional funding secured after the 2020 Spending Review. This allowed the NIHR to make additional investments in personal awards, in research programmes and in its wider research infrastructure. The NIHR also invested over £10m in its cross-NIHR Digital Data and Technology programme of work.

The report features:

  • An introduction from Professor Lucy Chappell, Chief Executive of the NIHR
  • A compilation of NIHR news highlights from throughout the year
  • NIHR's financial summary for 2021-22
