NIHR-supported stroke research in spotlight at conference

Date: 16 May 2019

The European Stroke Organisation Conference kicks off in Milan on Wednesday 22-24 May 2019.

#ESOC2019 is billed as the premier European forum for stroke research and the world’s foremost platform for the release of major study data.

Ahead of the conference, Professor Tom Robinson, National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) National Specialty Lead for Stroke, said:

“ESOC 2019 provides an ideal opportunity to showcase the major contribution NIHR has made and continues to make to informing stroke treatment and improving outcomes for patients and their families.

“NIHR supports randomised controlled trials and well-designed studies funded by NIHR or its partners at hospital and community sites across England. It is a testament to the quality of research supported by NIHR that many of these studies being presented at the conference will be co-published in high impact general medical journals, including the Lancet.”

Over the last 10 years, the NIHR has recruited nearly quarter of a million stroke patients to studies across the stroke pathway, including to acute, prevention and rehabilitation stroke trials.

Stroke studies supported by the NIHR with results being presented at ESOC 2019 include:

  • Management of blood pressure in acute ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke (ENCHANTED, INTERACT2 and RIGHT2),
  • Restarting secondary preventative antiplatelet treatment for ischaemic stroke after intracerebral haemorrhage (ReSTART),
  • The role of advanced imaging in treatment selection (PRACTISE) and the use of robotic technology in rehabilitation (RATULS).
  • Plus, NIHR supports pre-hospital stroke studies, such as RIGHT2 and PASTA.
