About us

Research nurse with young patient

The Clinical Research Network (CRN) is part of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), and is the clinical research delivery arm of the NHS, set up to support research to make patients, and the NHS better.

CRN Eastern has the second largest geography of the 15 local networks across England with a diverse population of around 3.8m across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and parts of Bedfordshire, Essex and Hertfordshire.

What we do

We are passionate about the contribution that clinical research can make to our patients lives, and work collaboratively with other NHS providers to translate that passion into the effective delivery of studies in the area.

To do this, we make sure that clinical research occupies the place it deserves in the day-to-day work of the NHS across the Eastern region. Our region includes 18 Trusts, 11 Clinical Commissioning Groups and selected other qualified providers of NHS services.

Find out more about the Trusts and CCGs in the Eastern region here.

We provide our Partner Organisations with the practical support they need to make clinical studies happen in the NHS, so that more research takes place across the region and more patients can take part.

This practical support includes:

  • Advising researchers on how to make their study work in the NHS
  • Reducing the bureaucracy associated with setting up a study
  • Helping researchers to identify suitable sites and recruit patients to take part in studies
  • Funding the people and facilities needed to carry out research
  • Access to nationally and locally designed research-related training.
