NIHR Leaders Support and Development Programme 

The NIHR Leaders Support and Development Programme seeks  to maintain and improve the quality of leadership in health and social care research by meeting the development needs of emerging leaders and early to mid-career researchers within the NIHR. The programme embodies in its design, structure, and approach the NIHR’s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Collectively the NIHR’s senior leaders are responsible for a budget that totals approximately £1 billion per year.  Individuals in these senior positions are required to lead across organisations, motivate large teams of people, manage major large budgets, and deliver sophisticated outcomes.

The programme aims to equip these leaders with formal training and development in leadership and management.  

The new NIHR Leadership Programme will have a  fresh, tailored and innovative design  that will focus on leadership and management that contributes to the strategic priorities of NIHR.

By doing this, the programme will benefit NIHR leaders by helping them manage leading-edge scientific research, patients and the public by driving faster translation of basic science discoveries into tangible benefits for patients and the public, and the NHS by creating the best possible conditions for inward investment by the life-sciences sector.

The new programme will have a number of elements:

  • A Future-focused leadership and management programme for NIHR Leaders and NIHR Emerging Leaders
  • A suite of modular resources for leadership and management development
  • A programme to support strategic initiatives within NIHR
