HEE/NIHR Integrated Clinical Academic Programme (ICA)
The Health Education England (HEE) and National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Integrated Clinical Academic (ICA) Programme provides personal research training awards for healthcare professionals (excluding doctors and dentists) who wish to develop careers that combine clinical research and research leadership with continued clinical practice and clinical development.
Applicants must belong to one of the eligible professions.
Five levels of award are available, each requiring the support of clinical and academic host organisations, which together form a career pathway for aspiring and developing non-medical clinical academics:
- Pre-doctoral Clinical Academic Fellowship - currently open for applications
- Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship - currently open for applications
- Clinical Lectureship -currently open for applications
- Senior Clinical Lectureship - currently open for applications
Doctoral and Post-Doctoral award holders are also eligible for ICA Programme-funded mentorship support through the ICA Mentorship scheme.
The ICA Programme also funds ICA Bridging Schemes to support members of the ICA eligible professions who wish to build on their previous academic training and to develop proposals for a pre or post-doctoral awards, and take the next step on their clinical academic pathway.
The ICA Personal research training awards are managed by the NIHR Academy (firstname.lastname@example.org). The ICA Internships and Bridging awards which are managed by HEE's Local Teams
ICA Scheme Competition Closing Dates
- Pre-doctoral Clinical Academic Fellowship: 11th April 2019
- Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship: 30th April 2019
- Clinical Lectureship and Senior Clinical Lectureship: 17th April 2019

Rules on Re-applications
From this round of competitions onwards, unsuccessful applicants will only be able apply to the same scheme on one further occasion. This does not include applications to any ICA scheme competitions made before 2019.
Please note - applications deemed fundable but which fall below the funding cut off will not be counted towards the maximum of 2 application attempts.
