The PPI Reference Group

The PPI reference group advises NETSCC on the strategic development of effective ways of working at every stage of the research management process, to support the implementation of the NETSCC PPI framework and business plan. 

The reference group is co-chaired by Jon Cole, NETSCC’s Assistant Director, Public Involvement and External Engagement  and Paul Andersen. 

The six public members of the PPI reference group are all experienced and skilled in varying aspects of PPI in health and social care research.

Paul Andersen (Co-Chair)

  • Public member of Ministry of Defence Research Ethics Committee and on the PULSE Ox Trial, Trial Steering Committee (TSC).  Previous public member of the Department of Health, Policy Research Programme funding panel,  NETSCC PPI Reference Group and  NHS Research Ethics Committee, (Isle of Wight and Portsmouth / South Central) 
  • Patient and the experience of caring for family member with terminal illness
  • Public contributor with the Health Research Authority
  • Public reviewer with NIHR for the following research programmes: Health Services and Delivery Research; Health Technology Assessment; Public Health Research 
  • Experience in public understanding of science as broadcast journalist and communications for national sight loss charity

Jennifer Bostock

  • Thirty years experience in involvement and research, passionate about involvement, works freelance for a variety of organisations

Jon Cole (Co-Chair)

  • Experienced NIHR manager having also worked in the areas of journal production, research prioritisation, clinical trials units and systematic reviews
  • Former Web Marketing Manager for the University of Southampton

Tess McManus

  • 20 years working for organisations "of and for" disabled people
  • Experienced public contributor on NICE and NIHR committees
  • Worked to support the development and delivery of accessible services to disabled people across social care and health
  • Public member for NIHR, NICE and PHE on disability/access and inclusion related topics

Linda Parkinson Hardman

Jane Putsey

  • Experienced public contributor on NICE and NIHR committees
  • Cared for parents at end of life and subsequently volunteered at local hospice
  • Public reviewer for NIHR applications
  • Grassroots volunteer supporting breastfeeding mums for many years, leading on to work to improve standards of care for infant feeding.  Now volunteers for Home Start.
