Professor Chris Price

Chris Price is Professor in Stroke and Applied Health Research at the Population Health Sciences Institute, Newcastle University and an honorary NHS Stroke Physician. As well as being NIHR National Specialty Lead for Stroke, he is Deputy Director of the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) for North East North Cumbria.

Chris was part of the original team that was awarded funding for the North East Stroke Research Network (NESRN). He took over as Clinical Lead for the NESRN in 2010, before becoming the Regional Specialty Lead until 2017. He is experienced as a UK Lead Investigator for academically-led international trials, and a member and chair of independent steering committees for various UK stroke studies.

As a chief investigator, Chris has been awarded research funding by NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Funding (PGfAR), Stroke Association, Innovate UK and Medical Research Council. The main focus of his work is examining the clinical and cost-effectiveness of new ways to enhance emergency care. This includes clinical assessment processes and portable diagnostic technology. Previous outputs from his research have led to changes in national policy and training recommendations for emergency medical services personnel.

He has also been lead and co-applicant on funding awards from NIHR Health Technology Assessment and the Stroke Association. This research examined new processes of care and technologies to promote recovery after stroke; and supported early career researchers from a wide range of backgrounds, including psychologists, therapists and paramedics.
