Professor Chris Whitty is Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for England. He leads the NIHR together with Dr Louise Wood and is chair of the NIHR Strategy Board.
Chris has overall responsibility for DHSC research and development, including the NIHR, and supporting the department’s analysis and life sciences. He is also NHS Consultant Physician at University College London Hospitals and Gresham Professor of Physic at Gresham College.
Chris is an epidemiologist and physician. He was previously Professor of Public and International Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, interim Government Chief Scientific Adviser and head of the science and engineering profession in government, and Chief Scientific Adviser at the UK Department for International Development. He has undertaken research in the UK, Africa and Asia.
