Medical writers - NIHR Alerts

The NIHR is looking for freelance medical journalists to write short, accessible summaries of recently-published research.

This is part of an NIHR initiative to increase the practical implementation of research results across the spectrum of health and social care. The summaries, Alerts, will be written for the audience best placed to act on the evidence, including health and social care professionals, commissioners, patients and the general public.

Alerts will highlight how research findings could or should change practice. In collaboration with researchers, writers will pick out the practical implications of a scientific paper and present a take-home message, along with the basics of a study, in an easy-read Q+A format. NIHR will be producing three Alerts a week from April 2020.

We are now looking to recruit a small team to write the Alerts on an ongoing basis. Writers will have a scientific/medical background, a good understanding of research statistics, and the ability to translate complex messages into straightforward copy.

Interested? Please send your CV, including a link to a recent article demonstrating these abilities, plus an indication of your day rate, to helen.saul@nihr.ac.uk.
