Programme Grants for Applied Research - Subcommittee Membership

We are pleased to announce an excellent opportunity has arisen to participate in Programme Grants for Applied Research assessment committees. These prestigious appointments offer senior applied health researchers the chance to take part in and gain experience of making recommendations to NIHR for large scale, high quality programmes of research for the benefit of patients and the NHS.

Senior Public Involvement Manager

From April 2020, a new NIHR centre will be formed to coordinate patient and public involvement, participation and engagement in research and research dissemination activity. By focusing on stakeholder collaboration the Centre will broaden the diversity of voices heard by NIHR in all of its activities and pioneer the use of alternative, audience targeted formats for dissemination products.  The goal is to make it easier for different stakeholder groups to contribute to and access NIHR funded research. This role is based at the NIHR Central Commissioning Facility in Twickenham, which is hosted by LGC's Grant Management Group.

Job Purpose

The Senior Public Involvement Manager will contribute to strategy and deliver operational support to improve public:

  • Involvement (where members of the public are actively involved in research projects and research organisations),
  • Participation (where people take part in a research study), and.
  • Engagement (where information and knowledge about research is provided and disseminated).

Key Responsibilities

  • Contributing to the development of stakeholder engagement strategies related to patient and public involvement, participation and engagement
  • Actively meeting stakeholders across England (and the rest of the UK as required) to build networks and communities around best practice patient and public involvement, participation and engagement
  • Overseeing work with stakeholder groups to obtain feedback on public involvement, engagement and participation activities to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Supporting the development and coordination of a health and care system wide public involvement, engagement and participation networks
  • Championing best practice in public involvement, engagement and participation across the Centre and wider NIHR
  • Delivering and supporting new initiatives designed to develop better practice
  • Ensuring implementation of mechanisms to promote knowledge transfer about best practice in public involvement, engagement and participation
  • Promoting continuous improvement of public involvement, engagement and participation processes and activities
  • Coaching and mentoring other members of the Centre team
  • Representing NIHR at national events to promote public involvement, engagement and participation in research 
  • Working with policy leads at DHSC to ensure that public involvement, engagement and participation work is aligned with wider strategic initiatives in NIHR
