Supporting Information

Please note that the Word version of the Stage 1 application form is to be used as a guide and to assist with completion of the online application form only, for example to see how many characters are accepted in each section and how the printed complete form is laid out. Please do not try to use this as an application form, you must apply using the online form available through the links available when calls are open. You should also refer to the application form guidance notes which can be found next to the ‘Apply Now’ button.

The Public Health Research (PHR) Programme is accepting Stage 1 applications to their commissioned workstream for these topics.

For this call, we wish to draw your attention to the following commissioning briefs that we have previously advertised and failed to fund sufficient research in. These represent enduring gaps in our portfolio that we would like to fill with high quality research.

Please consult the NIHR Specialist Centre for Public Health (SCPH) about the design of your research as soon as possible. Successful applications generally require a long time (several months) to develop.

How to apply

In order to apply you will need to carefully review the following commissioning briefs:

Guidance

If you are interested in applying for any of these funding opportunities, please refer to the relevant commissioning brief in your Stage 1 application form (section 2 of the Research plan). However, please bear in mind that the commissioning briefs, along with the underpinning literature searches, have not been updated since originally written.

Timescales

Any changes to these dates will be emailed to all Lead Applicants with an application in progress.

  • Stage one deadline: 1pm on 9 August 2024
  • Notification of out of remit/non-competitive decision if unsuccessful: End August 2024
  • Notification of stage one shortlisting decision: Early November 2024
  • Stage two writing window: Early November to early January 2025
  • Notification of stage two funding decision: mid-end March 2025
  • Start date for funded studies: 1 October/1 November 2025

Please note, if a very high response is received, some applications may not be taken forward for further assessment if they are deemed to be non-competitive, and it may be necessary to defer some applications until a later date. 'Non-Competitive' means that an application is not of a sufficiently high standard to be taken forward for further assessment in comparison with other applications received and funded by the PHR Programme, because it has little or no realistic prospect of funding. This may be because of scientific quality, cost, scale and duration, or the makeup of the project team.

All primary research projects are expected to establish a programme appointed Study/Trial Steering Committee, and it is important that you read the Research Governance Guidance before completing your application. Costs incurred by this committee should be included in the budget as appropriate.
