Professor Tariq Iqbal

Professor Tariq Iqbal is the National Specialty Lead for NIHR Clinical Research Network Gastroenterology Specialty.

He is Professor of Clinical Microbiome and Director and co-founder of University of Birmingham Microbiome Treatment Centre, as well as Consultant Gastroenterologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.  Before being appointed as the National Specialty Lead, Tariq held the role of Industry Lead for Gastroenterology for a number of years.

Tariq studied and trained in Cambridge and is the Chair of a number of committees, including the UK Microbiome for Health Expert Panel and the recent British Society of Gastroenterology Irritable Bowel Disorder (IBD) Guidelines development committee.

As the Director of the Microbiome Treatment Centre, Tariq was instrumental in gaining a special licence for faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) manufacture and export, becoming the second largest FMT supplier in the world, only behind OpenBiome in the US. 

In addition to leading the development of FMT for treatment and for use in clinical trials in the UK, Tariq is also a key opinion leader in iron metabolism in the gut and led the anaemia treatment section of the 2015 anaemia in IBD guideline committee.
