Become a peer reviewer

What is a peer reviewer?

External peer reviewers help us at every stage of the research process.

Our reviewers help to:

  • prioritise research topics,
  • ensure we fund the best applications
  • shape reports published by our Journals Library

Reviewers have a vital role in maintaining and improving the quality of our research.

Our guidance gives you more information about the role of our external peer reviewers.

If you are an early career researcher or professional you may be eligible to join our Reviewer Development Scheme.

Why review for us?

You will make a significant contribution to the NHS, social care and public health by shaping the research we fund. Our funding programmes identify the highest impact questions for health and social care. The research you review will make a real difference.

You can develop valuable insight into best practice in health and social care research. You will also have the opportunity to see the standards of successful applications for funding.

Reviewing can be used as evidence of continuing professional development (CPD). We provide written confirmation of completed tasks for inclusion in your CPD portfolio. For consultant grade medical reviewers, peer review for NIHR is also recognised in Clinical Excellence Award submissions.
