Our Public Health Research Programme Funding Committee is looking for experts in the social determinants of health and health inequalities, with experience in evaluating public health interventions.

This opportunity is for professionals currently active in one or more of the following areas:

  • social determinants of health 
  • health inequalities 
  • public health interventions

About the PHR Funding Committee

The Funding Committee’s role is to advise the Programme Director on the scientific quality, feasibility and value for money aspects of proposals submitted to the programme.

Funding Committee covers the PHR Programme’s remit to fund research that evaluates non-NHS interventions that may impact on health and health inequalities and have the potential to be delivered at scale. The research should generate evidence to inform public health decision-making and lead to sustainable population-level change. The Programme is particularly interested in studies that focus on the wider determinants of health. 

About the role

The term of office is normally three years starting in early 2025. The first Funding Committee Meeting for this appointment is likely to be in February 2025 but a later start in June 2025 will be considered. 

The committee meets up to three times a year, usually in February, June and October with a current maximum of one meeting per year being in-person in central London. Any travel and expenses incurred for attending in-person meetings will be paid.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for applicants with the following experience:

Essential

Applicants must have:

  • relevant public health background
  • knowledge and understanding of the importance of, and need for public health research
  • current or recent experience of working in or with the UK public health sector at a senior level
  • experience at a senior level in their field of expertise
  • relevant professional qualifications and registrations
  • work-based or professional knowledge or experience relevant to the remit of the programme
  • academic background and track record of research achievement and leadership

Applicants must be able to:

  • understand, review and summarise information from long documents
  • confidently and constructively take part in meetings and group discussions
  • clearly communicate and share feedback and thoughts
  • use a computer-based management information system and be computer literate

Desirable

  • knowledge and experience of peer review processes
  • experience of peer review for the NIHR Programmes
  • knowledge and experience of public health Research and Development, including research methods
