NIHR Academy launches new mentoring programme

Published: 24 February 2021

The NIHR Academy has launched a new mentoring programme for postdoctoral Academy Members. The aim of the programme is to support the academic and career development of our postdoctoral communities

The refreshed NIHR Academy programme will support postdoctoral Academy Members from a broad range of professional and disciplinary contexts across our diverse health and social care communities to seek a mentor from the senior NIHR leadership community. It will build on the NIHR Academy mentoring programme previously delivered in partnership with the Academy of Medical Sciences.

The key objectives of the programme are to:

  • extend the NIHR Academy mentoring offer to postdoctoral award holders from disciplines and professional backgrounds which may not have a strong mentoring tradition, or may not have had access to programmes such as this in the past
  • promote interdisciplinarity; mentors and mentees will be able to seek a mentor from a cognate or complementary discipline or professional background where appropriate
  • support mentoring relationships between individuals from different organisations and institutions
  • promote equality, inclusion and diversity through engagement with, and learning from, under-represented groups.

Participants in the programme will be supported through access to regular professional development events and resources. In addition, mentors and mentees will have access to a mentoring platform to support their mentoring relationships.

Professor Dave Jones, Dean for the NIHR Academy said, “I am delighted to announce the launch of the NIHR Academy’s new mentoring programme. The refreshed programme extends mentoring across our diverse medical, health and social care communities, to sectors that may not have had a strong mentoring tradition or access to programmes such as this in the past. We hope to see a wide range of mentors and mentees take advantage of the programme to support their professional career development and leadership capabilities”.

The mentoring programme is accepting applications for both mentors and mentees in its initial cohort until midday on 12 April. To read more about the mentoring programme, visit the NIHR mentoring page, where you will also find expression of interest forms to join the programme.
