NIHR awards funding for global health research in low and middle income countries (LMICs) that are eligible to receive Official Development Assistance (ODA).
We currently have five different funding programmes you can apply to, as well as career development funding and funding opportunities offered in partnership with other organisations in global health research.
NIHR is committed to supporting equitable partnerships between LMIC and UK researchers. We offer funding and advice to help applicants develop such partnerships.
We champion the involvement of patients and communities in LMICs in all aspects of the research we fund, to improve its reach, quality and impact.
We want to ensure that the research we fund achieves the maximum benefit for people in LMICs. Research proposals should have a clear and actionable strategy for delivering impact, including research uptake and dissemination.
All applications for funding should be submitted online before the published deadline. All applications are assessed by funding committees made up of academics, health professionals, representatives from relevant communities and members of the public.
NIHR funds research by contracting researchers’ organisations on behalf of the UK Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.
