Conflict is often avoided in the workplace in order to create a safe environment. Paradoxically it has the opposite effect. That tension, whether demonstrated in simmering frictions, a feeling of exclusion or a need to cover our authentic opinions, negatively impacts our sense of safety.
Safe conflict can be a catalyst for innovation and growth. To get there, we need to foster a culture of seeing the bigger picture in conflict and encourage diverse viewpoints to challenge ours. We can also look at the five factors that our brain is always monitoring to understand how to support safe conflict.
